Attendance

Regular attendance is vital for your child’s success, helping them to achieve their best and develop important life skills.

Attend today and acheive tomorrow - make every day count!

At Lift Hazelwood we place high importance on regular attendance and punctuality of pupils.

Much of the work children miss when they are absent is never made up and this can leave children at a disadvantage for the remainder of their school career. Attending school is therefore vital if your child is to achieve their full potential.

We believe good attendance is everyone's responsibility and therefore we aim to work with parents, pupils and staff across the school to ensure all pupils achieve the maximum possible attendance.

The target attendance figure for all pupils is a minimum of 97% attendance.

At Lift Hazelwood we track each child's attendance percentage against the SOL Attendance Diamond (below).

We then review the attendance patterns of every child, every week. If attendance is falling week on week we will contact you to check in and see if any support measures are needed.  As a parent it is your legal duty to ensure your child attends school and we want to help you overcome any difficulties you may encounter.

It is important that parents/carers monitor single day’s absence, as these days soon add up to weeks.

Our aim is to address any issues before any pupils attendance falls down to a level where a significant amount of learning is lost.

Reporting an absence

If your child is unable to attend school, please notify the school as soon as possible: Contact us

Day 1:

Contact the school to report the absence and provide the reason and expected return date.

Day 2 and beyond:

Keep the school informed of your child’s progress and update the expected return date where possible. Absences can be reported by phone or via the school’s dedicated absence email: Contact us

First day calling policy

If we haven’t heard from you by a set time (usually 09:15 am), a member of the school’s administration team will contact you to confirm the reason for absence.

School attendance and the law

Parents and carers are legally responsible for ensuring their child attends school regularly and punctually. Failure to do so could result in legal action by the local authority.

Under the Education (Pupil Registration) Regulations 2006, only the school can authorise an absence – not parents or carers.

Time off for holidays during term time is not a legal right. Any request for a leave of absence must be made in advance by completing an absence form and submitting it to the school office. If a holiday is taken without permission, the absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and could result in legal action.
